Population

The Charleston-North Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 336,125 in 1970 to 664,607 in 2010. That was an inecrease of 97.7 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 3,286 in 1970 to 33,919 in 2010. That was an increase of 932.2 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.0 percent to 5.1 percet.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 89.5 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the principal source of population increase in the first period, with NDM in that role for the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the same relative importance of the factors influencing population change was maintained.
